I'm starting to plan a trip to Ucluelet and Barclay Sound for this August.  My plan is to spend 3-4 weeks or so up North and fish where the fish are either in the ocean or the sound.

Anyone else going that way?  We can meet up when you are there and share fish stories.

I'm planning to leave August 5th or 6th depending on the winds.

I've had good luck in other years.  http://www.psafidalgo.org/Fish%20Pictures/Uclulet2005/Ucluelet%202005.htm

Last year the big fish was 37 pounds caught by member Jim Walwrath

I may hook up with you up there.  Been thinking about going up there and I don't know the area; do you guys camp?, stay in a lodge?

Jim,

There are a lot of options and camping and lodges are included in them.  My boat is big enough we camp on it.  I tend to use Ucluelet as a base but a few nights anchor up in the islands.  In Ucluelet I stay at the Government docks located in front of the Princess boats.  In the islands often we anchor in the bay between Dodd and Turtle Island.

And we could sure hook up.  I don't know the schedule yet, but I'm looking at a trip again this year.

I've done a lot of fishing in the islands which is lot like fishing in the San Juan's.  The last several years though the fish don't seem to hang in there.  The fishing seems to be better offshore and we are 3-20 miles off shore on one of the banks depending on where we find fish.

I have been to nootka that last two summers and fishing on the inside has been tough.  Guys that were getting their limits had to run out into the ocean.  They guys I was fishing with weren't comfortable with that and we really didn't have the boat for it.  Any idea why the fish aren't on the inside anymore like they use to be?  Just not the number of fish as there where in the past?

Good question Woodfighter, I don't now.  What I do know is I try and try inside doing everthing exactly like I used to and we catch fish, but it's slow.  The fish seem to be running a little deeper to.  We used to fish with the riggers 25-30 and now we have to go deeper.

I wish I knew as for the folk that get sea sick,,,,,, like my grandkids I don't like to take them on the ocean and we go inside.  Last year the most fun they had was fishing for rock fish as there was lots of action.

Monashee, I look forward to this trip, I've been wanting to do this for several years.  Be expecting more questions.

If it's with the wife, we're talking a cabin, or a campground with all the bells and whistles.   If it's me and one or two of my teenage sons, we'll camp on an Island.  As far as I'm concerned rockfish are a blast, especially shallow on light tackle. My boat will handle offshore, but I'd rather do this with another boat or two for safety sake.

Thanks,

Jim

Questions are good, I just hope I have an answer that makes sense.

As  we get closer, we can firm up plans.
